How much do adults really know about their child’s oral health?

What is the current state of your family's oral health?

According to a recent study conducted by the Children's Health Dental Project (CDHP), there are significant gaps in adult's knowledge of children's oral health. Although oral care may seem like a simple idea to understand, many are left in the dark in terms of easy fixes such as brushing daily and signs of tooth decay.

Tooth decay is the most chronic health condition of childhood, with two in five U.S. adults under the belief that nothing can be done. This issue is especially prevalent in low-income families. To remedy this situation, many believe that knowledge is key.

The study also found that:

  • Bacteria that causes tooth decay can be transmitted from parent to child
  • Sugar in natural juices can contribute to oral health issues
  • Parents should begin brushing their children's teeth as soon as they appear in the mouth

"We need to remind families that they have more control than they realize, and prevention starts long before children enter school. We all need to give families the knowledge and tools that support the habits that will put children on a lifelong path of oral health," said CDHP executive director Meg Booth.

In addition to better knowledge of dental checkups and health, orthodontic health is also essential, especially at a younger age. Although each child has a unique mouth, some of the issues they face may be similar. Some of the most common oral health issues include:

  • Baby teeth that emerge later than usual
  • Baby teeth that were lost unusually early
  • Breathing with the mouth open
  • Chewing or biting with difficulty
  • Crowding or blocked teeth
  • Jaw shifting or unnatural noises when chewing
  • Teeth that don't meet or are located in the wrong spot

If your child has any of these issues, or you do, there is help. Schedule a consultation today to learn more.
